The revered Isle of Mull Cheese, a traditional farmhouse cheddar, has been lovingly crafted by the Reade family since 1980, reflecting a deep-rooted tradition of Scottish cheesemaking. This robust, full-flavoured cheddar distinguishes itself with a drier texture compared to other varieties, offering a taste that is bold, richly savoury, and uniquely infused with a hint of alcohol. Made from raw cow’s milk and animal rennet, each wheel is clothbound and undergoes careful maturation for 10 to 16 months. This precise aging process brings forth its full-bodied, artisanal nature, delighting cheese aficionados who crave a strong and genuine flavour profile. The Reade family’s foray into cheesemaking began in the 1980s on their farm in Somerset, initially as a personal hobby that blossomed into their central family business, driven by a desire to innovate beyond the conventional. Traditionally, cheesemaking played a vital role in conserving the excess milk produced during the summer on the islands. In remote Scottish areas, robust ‘farmhouse’ cheeses have long been a dietary staple due to their longer shelf life compared to softer cheeses and other dairy products. This tradition continues today, with new generations of the family contributing to the evolving legacy of the Isle of Mull’s only dairy farm.
