Choosing Oatcakes & Biscuits for a Cheeseboard

A good cracker supports the cheese rather than competing with it. Traditional oatcakes offer a crisp, savoury base, while thin wafers and flavoured biscuits can add variety. When serving several cheeses, include at least one relatively neutral option.

More strongly flavoured biscuits can be excellent with mature cheddar or smoked cheese, but delicate soft cheeses are often easier to appreciate with something simpler.

Oatcakes & Cheese Biscuit FAQs

What cheese goes best with Scottish oatcakes?

Oatcakes are versatile enough for cheddar, Brie, blue and many soft cheeses. The best match depends on how strongly flavoured the oatcake is.

Are oatcakes good for a cheeseboard?

Yes. Their crisp texture and generally restrained flavour make them a classic cheeseboard accompaniment.

How many types of crackers should I serve?

One or two styles are enough for many boards. Include a neutral option if you are serving delicate cheeses.

What else should I serve with oatcakes and cheese?

Chutney, pickles, fruit and charcuterie can all add contrast and turn a simple cheese course into a fuller grazing board.

Can oatcakes be included in a cheese gift?

Yes. Oatcakes are a practical accompaniment and pair naturally with mixed cheese selections and Scottish cheese gifts.
